Two Reading Journals Essay Example for Free
Two Reading Journals EssayA Good spell is Hard to Find by Flannery OConnor is a story which utilizes caricatures of people to reveal some aspects of character that all readers can identify with. While the characters on the literal level seem too unreasonably stereotyped to be real, some of their behaviors and responses are actually very similar to those of all humanity. For example, the Grandmother begins as the quintessential nagging, hyper-critical, self-absorbed old woman that everyone prefers to ignore. However, her constant spouting of religious maxims and her ability to use her holier-than-thou attitude for guilt purposes is a trait that many another(prenominal) readers recognize in their own family members or even themselves, perhaps as the oppressed son, even. After the initial encounter with the Misfit, these stereotypical demeanors fade away, and the real character of the characters can come through. This is similar to the concept that peoples true selves come through in times of great trial or emergency. The impolite children clam up in fear, and the grandmother begins to treat the Misfit with an almost caring respect, which he doesnt buy, of course. Her ultimate attempt to save the Misfit from sin fails, just as her attempt to win loyalty from her son by guilting him into doing her bidding fails. However, she is forced into thinking about someone else, in this case the Misfit. Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been? by Joyce Carol Oates tells the story of a tough talking teen girl who is constantly concerned with the appearance she projects to the outside world. Her tough exterior is extremely believable, as many teens suffer from this underlying lack of confidence. However, her pursuit by the psychotic Arnold Friend forces her t realize that not everyone will fall for the tough and sang-froid exterior. Arnolds friendly exterior keeps her off guard just long enough for him to draw her in. He knows that deep inside she is scared and eager to revel this is how he wins her ultimate and fatal compliance. He had forced her to realize that she was not the tough chick she wanted to be, and she notes that she just felt empty. The shell was cracked, and there was nought inside. Both of these stories contrast the exterior of a person with his or her interior. In the face of a perilous situation, both the Grandmother and Connie realize they cannot fall choke on their usual game. Both, then allow themselves to be victimized in the absence of any other choices.

Abrasive Flow Machining Essay Example for Free
Abrasive Flow Machining Essay1. IntroductionAbrasive flow machining (AFM) was firstly actual fifty years ago by Extrude Hone Corporation, USA. By using the facile viscoelastic material with easy flowability made of polymer and nettlesome grains, AFM groundwork be used to polish, deburr and radius for the workpiece. There are three kinds of AFM one-way AFM, bipartisan AFM and orbital AFM 1. In this case to manufacture the cylinder heads, consider of two-way AFM is much to a greater extent widely used and its technology is more mature, we also choose the two-way AFM to do the surface finishing. Schematic of two-way flow shows in figure below. infix 1 principle of material removal mechanism in two-way AFM process 1 Prior to machining, liquid cranky will be put into the lower medium cylinder, the designed mend which clamping the workpiece will be fixed amidst two cylinders. The upper medium, lower medium cylinder and fixture will form a confined space. After heat the whole s ystem to working temperature, by forcing the lower plumbers helper (usually by hydraulic), the liquid techy will be pressed into the channel formed by clamp and workpiece, then flow into the upper medium cylinder. After the stroke of lower piston finished, the upper piston will force the liquid abrasive back into lower cylinder 2, an operating cycle will be finished.See more Beowulf essay essay2. Three key elements of AFM1) Machine toolUse to fasten the workpiece and fixture, and control the pressure applied on the workpiece, to adjust the degree of abrasive accuracy.2) Liquid AbrasiveLiquid abrasive is abrasive tool in the AFM, it should has following properties, a) Non-corroding and dont adhere to the workpiece and human skin. b) Good adhesive properties between different abrasive grains. c) Be able to maintain the viscoelasticity for a long timed) Non-volatile and non-deteriorate after a long time preservation. e) Strong cohesion. For these properties, the conventional liquid ab rasive is made fromSemi-solid carrier which has viscoelasticity, flexibility and cutting property mixed with abrasive grains. Different intrinsic viscosities of different carriers, different types and size of abrasive grains stick out affect the final tolerance and roughness 2. The most frequently used abrasives are silicon carbide, carborundum, Cubic Boron Nitride(CBN), aluminum oxide, the size of grain take leave from 0.005mm to 1.5mm. Abrasive with high viscosity is mainly used to polish the walls of workpiece and large through-hole while low viscosity abrasive is primarily for radiusing the edge and polishing the refined through-hole.3) FixtureThe function of fixture,a) Positioning and fixing the workpiece.b) Bearing clamping force for some workpiece.c) Constitute a channel for liquid abrasive with some machined surface of workpiece in suitable size and section.d) Realizing simultaneous machine multiple workpiece in one device.3. Advantage of AFM,Abrasive flow machining has a ccuracy, stability and flexibility. It uses liquid abrasive to remove the metal material infinitesimally, deburr and radius the internal intersections of workpiece. At present, AFM is widely used in automotive industry and other manufacturing. The fundamental advantage of AFM is the liquid abrasive goat reach the positions which are not easily be machined by tradition surface finish methods since the complexity of workpiece, polished surface evenly and in integrity, messiness processing has the same result. These characteristics improve the performance of part, extend the working life, avoid the multifarious manual labour, and lower the intensity of labor. For example, when polish the intake-tube of vehicle by conventional process, the tube need to be cut into half, then welding after polishing, but using the AFM, cut and welding can be avoided 3.4. Geometrical and thermal effects.Viscosity of liquid abrasive will decrease when the working temperature enhances 3, and working abi lity of abrasive depends on its viscosity as the figure 2 shown.Figure 2 the machining effects of different viscosity of abrasive materials 5 Since cutting force is proportional to viscosity, so higher viscosity means stronger contrition ability, as a result abrasive with higher viscosity will get a better surface. In conclusion, temperature is a very important factor during the process. While the abrasive grains polish the surface, it will generate heat, enhancing the temperature as the figure 3 shown.Figure 3 Variation of rise in temperature of workpiece with number of cycles 4 The rise of temperature will keep the working ability reduce. So cooling system is need during the process to ensure the best machined surface. Geometry of cylinder head also affects the result of surface finishing. umpteen small through-holes exist in the cylinder head, flow rate of abrasive is much bigger in these through-holes according to fluid mechanics, even these accelerations enhance craunch abi lity, but due to shearing force generated by abrasive being extrusion at narrow pass, it is evident that temperature will rise rapidly, lower the grinding ability. So geometrical effect need to consider when design a cylinder head.1. Precursores De La Teoria De La Calidad

reflective Analysis Of A Students Induction WeekReflective Analysis has gained a high level of recognition in higher education, it is now used to structure students learning major power, Reflective Analysis as military serviceed me to be commensurate to analyse and assess current and physiqueer(prenominal) events, situation and fix.Ann Mathews (2007) state that it is a way whereby an individual turn out to be self self-sufficient so as to be able to solve line of works the purpose of reflection dep shoemakers lasts on hypothesis, this deals with putting into practice all the achieved knowledge from academic and organisational environment, its also deals with the skills and ability that an individual has to pass these achieved information to any(prenominal)one else with the aim that the person with hit upon the information judiciously.Kolb (1975) state that when an individual comes up with ideas and re-assess old knowledge into learning hitherto it also deals with turning o r re-cycling old and new experience learnt into knowledge so as to use them for future purposes this is an important aspect when piece a report in higher education because it helps students to come up with new and old ideas on how problems are solved. These are what I attained maculation paternity my applied management calculate1) Reflective learning helped me go writing my applied management project because I was able to come up with past and present experience and this aspect helped me in analysing all the inevitable concepts on how to get and compile informations so as to achieve my aims and objective.2) Reflective learning as also helped in turning my experience to learning, these has helped me to assess seriously all the process of learning and as also improve my learning experience academically. recollection OF EXPERIENCENow that the induction week is over, it is now time for me to commence with my dissertation, the induction week lasted for 1 week and it started on the 8 th of February 2010 which was on a Monday although we were divided into two cohort and I was lucky to be part of cohort B, the first day of the induction was generally much or less the introduction to the whole which was given by Vincent Org and Peter Patrick, the stand by day was more(prenominal) arouse because Alan Bullimore and Peter Patrick talked about how to source for informations and referencing, on that same day we were all trained to form a group of seven to eighter member and progenys where given out to each group accordingly, on that same day Steve Briggs and Prof Brain Mathew talked about writing a report, Plagiarism and TurnitinUK, During this lecture we were told that the rest of the week will be a group discussion and we will be able to ask necessary questions about the topic from how tutors and we where also told that after the ends of these induction week no one will be able to receive any help or assistance from any tutor. After the end of the induction wee k I realised that it was time for me to commence with my chosen topic although I came across a toilet of challenges, this gave me a lot of concern because I was the only person in my group so I had to no one to supersede ideas with, I had to draw up a scheme to monitor my progress date I was busy writing on my chosen topic, I knew I had to start searching for relevant journals and articles which helped me a lot to understand what the topic was all about, I had no choice than to build up courage more over this is the finally stage that will determine if I would be awarded a master degree in Logistics Business and Management. Even though this is my second attempt, I knew I had to prove a point by making sure that I dont make that same mistake I made while I was writing my first chosen topic, while writing on my chosen topic I noticed some shortcomings which I realised that I had no choice than to tackle or find a solution to them. The follow were my shortcomingsSHORTCOMINGS1) I nsufficient Fund while I was writing on my chosen topic, I came across some relevant articles and journal online which were for sale and very expensive to purchase, this particular weakness was heartbreaking because at that particular moment I was not financially stable to purchase all the relevant journal and articles online.2) Lack of understanding Understanding the chosen topic was some other challenge I faced while I was writing on my chosen topic, at first I had less idea about how to come up with relevant and necessary information and particularly the kind of information I need to include in the headings and sub-headings, I spent a lot of time on these forwards I figured out things.CORRECTION MADE1) With the help of the learning resources centre, I was able to get more journals, articles, magazines, books and newspapers relating to my chosen topic, corporate accessible responsibility.2) I had to call my sponsor about my present financial situation, I was given all the nec essary support I needed, this really helped me because I had more opportunity to assess more journal, articles and books online.GROUP FORMATIONOn the 9th of February 2010, Vicent Org and Peter Patrick asked everybody in each department to form a group of seven to eight members, unfortunately I am just the only person in my group because this is my second attempt, there was no-one to relate or exchange ideas with, I had to some up courage within myself so that I would be able to accomplish my aims and objectives of coming to the university of Bedfordshire to study, I drew up a strategy which I used to check my progress while I was writing my chosen topic, I gave myself a target which I had to meet up with at the end of each day.LEARNING EXPERIENCEAlthough this is my second attempt that I am writing this same module ( apply Management Project), I have gained a lot of experiences two from my first and second attempt, writing a dissertation is a huge challenge so I had to apply all the necessary skills learnt from both past and present knowledge. These are the lessons learnt while writing on my chosen topic1) I have learnt how to be efficient and effective in problem solving and also produce a quality outcome.2) I am capable of handle my possess learning and career process efficiently and effectively.3) I have learnt how to be self motivated and this as also improved my decision making skills, I can now work on my own without getting assistance from group members.4) I have learnt how to manage my own time set a realistic target and monitor my progress while working on my chosen topic.5) With the help of Alan Bullimore and Peter Godwin I have learnt how to search and retrieve important and relevant information from recognised sources.LESSON FOR FUTURE sound projection1) Time Management Time management is an organised use of common sense tactic and planning, when writing or embarking on a project or dissertation, one should be cautious about time management beca use it basically deals with how and when to meet up with targets if it is used effectively and efficiently, time should be made for errors and corrections, I now see time management as a continuous process in keep in other to achieve aim goals and objectives.2) ego Management Self Management is the actual process of utilizing time marginally and making a technical decision so as to achieve ones aims and objectives, before embarking on a project one as to have the followers attributes self confident, self reliance and self control, these qualities are very important while writing a project or before embarking on a project because they help during and after the research process.3) Measuring Performance When writing a dissertation, it is advisable for students to set up a realistic tactic or strategy which will be used to measure their progress while writing on their chosen topic, this lets students know if he or she is working as scheduled, these aspect helps to achieve the major aim of writing this project which is handing in the project or dissertation before deadline.4) Risk Management Risk Management is a process of minimizing risk not actually eradicating the risk but numbering the loss before the situation occurs, while writing on my chosen topic I had to create the risk of set backs in my target so as to accomplish my mission or else I might have encountered obstacles which might cause delay or set back in my project.5) sledding of work and Plagiarism When writing a report or dissertation, it is necessary that all the vital informations and datas gathered are saved in a dear and secured place to avoid damage, furthermore while writing on my chosen topic I was careful about coping directly from authors, inaccurate referencing and accumulate because It is a serious academic offence.PERSONAL ENCOUNTERThe applied management project is a formidable tax it has being a terrible experience for me because I had to write this particular module all over a gain, although the module as facilitated me in gaining more knowledge and also applying these gained knowledge to real life situations.I came across several complications while writing on my chosen topic, the first problem I came across was how to analyse and evaluate my chosen topic since I was the only person in my group I had no one to exchange ideas and relevant informations with, I had to build up courage so as to achieve my aim and objective which is handing in a good report and rounding up the report two weeks before deadline so as pass my report to my brother to proof read so that necessary corrections can be made, furthermore other difficulties were sourcing for relevant journals, articles, newspapers and books but following all the informations gathered from the induction weeks I was able to draw up strategies on how to tackle this problems and to the best of my knowledge my strategies worked out fine. pen THE INTRODUCTIONThis is a very important part when writing a report or dissertation, I found it really difficult to start writing the introduction because it took for a while before I could apprehend what my chosen topic was all about, I had to go into a serious research so as to have a full idea about the topic, because I wanted a good and perfect report I came up with a strategy to guide me by dint of the process of writing on my chosen topic, this strategy was really helpful since i used it to monitor my progress while writing on my chosen topic, it took me up to two weeks to round up this part, moreover because of my kind of topic I had a lot of informations to discuss on, despite the fact that I was assay to round up this part I realized that I had some distractions which resulted to me relocating from Luton to Merseyside so as to achieve my key aim and objective of coming to the university of Bedfordshire to study.WRITING THE LITERATURE REVIEWThis is the most complex part when writing a report or dissertation, I had to take my time to comp ile and gather informations since the belles-lettres review determines ones strengths and weakness on the chosen topic, furthermore this part of the report requires me to prove to the reader the kind of knowledge, facts and ideas that I have set up on the chosen topic, this part is a channel concept which consist of problems, issues and basically argumentative theories, according to my primed(p) down strategy it took me up to a month to round up this part because I was checking and scrutinizing my work so that I dont get myself involve in plagiarism and chunking.WRITING THE ANALYSES AND DISCUSSIONThis part is another difficult aspect when writing a report, it entails evaluating, analysing and discussing all the relevant informations in the previous chapters, it took me one week to round up this part because it requires careful interlingual rendition and discussion of each headings and sub-headings furthermore I make sure that all my arguments were logical and reasonable. Althoug h this part was not really taxing because I was self-assured that I was on the right track.Although I came across challenges while writing the analyses and discussion but I was able to tackle it with the help of my laid down strategy and previous experience.WRITING THE CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONComing up with a reasonable and logical recommendation and conclusion was another taxing experience because it requires prudish concise, clarity, consistency, accurate and objectivity, I spent a lot of time trying to round up this part so as to make my report interesting and attractive, I had to lay emphasis on all the literatures I studied and also explain how they justify or contradict each other, with the help of my laid down strategy it took me up to four weeks to round-up this part.CONCLUSIONThe process of writing this dissertation as been a great experience and achievement for me, even though this is my second attempt I have been able to motivate myself morally and academically on h ow to be efficient and effective in whatever I encounter in life, This module (Applied Project Management) is a vital aspect during the process of a masters degree programme, I have learnt all the necessary requirements, process, methods and structures of writing a standard and professional detailed report. In addition, through out my learning process at the University of Bedfordshire I have being able to develop my presentation skills, analyse and evaluate academic write-up, business issues and finally gaining a deep understanding about my course (Logistics and Business Management). Finally Applied Project Management is basically about the development of academic skill and ability.

Issues Related To Household Expenditures And Consumption Economics Essay
Issues Related To class Expenditures And Consumption Economics EssayIntroductionWith scotch and social progression of the nation the minimal basket of basic human needs which a society would expect for its citizen may be expected to suffer expanding. These changes in the basic needs of the society may be affordable by the aim of income. The take of income of the star signs ensures the minimum standard of living in the society.Household income and outgo expenditure are two direct monetary measures utilize in assessing the economical well- beingness of a population. However, economic consumption expenditure is preferred to income as it theorizes long-run economic status of the family unit, tell aparticularly in low income countries (Friedman 1957). It is important to none however that expenditures are not similar with income, which may even be a better indicator of well-being, for various reasons. Among them is the possibility of consumption without expenditures at leas t within the same period. According to Atkinson, (1998), Expenditures are indeed supposed to better reflect long-term or permanent income and are from this point of view considered to be a better measure of economic well-being and respective inequalities.Besides, in ontogeny countries, income estimates are under-reported, drawn from multiple sources and vary across seasons. Though the consumption expenditure data are collected in many developing countries including India, the dish out is beat-consuming, expensive and needs adjustment for home base sizing, composition and for price level. Owing to these difficulties, the economic proxies (consumer durables, housing quality and household amenities) are collected to measure the economic status of the households in both small-and large-scale population-based visual modalitys. In the context of the growth performance during these two decades, economists and policymakers have become interested in the trends in kingdomal variation during this period. Rising regional variation can create economic, social and political problems for any country. For the Indian economy, it has serious ramification for the continuation of the reform process. Hence, it is of utmost enormousness to understand the regional disparity in terms of consumption expenditure on consumer durables, housing quality and household amenities of the economy.Household expenditures as they terminus from budget limitations at the one hand and choices based on needs, demand, preferences etc. on the other may be regarded as manifestations of economic and social inequalities as well as cultural differences and social distinctions. Studying the patterns, disparities and determinants of household expenditures and their changes across time by making use of large scale population surveys thus seem to be promising in various respects. At a most general level it may provide insights into general consumption behavior as a major source of human well-being and respective choices and restrictions.Investigating household expenditures and consumption patterns is considered to be key for the monitoring and explanation of inequalities and changes in material living standards and general welfare. Studying expenditures and consumption behaviour of households in addition seems to be an important and promising strategy to extend and supplement mainstream approaches of instructing un interchangeableness as a key topic of sociological and economic research. As one would expect, research on household expenditures and consumption is very much to a greater extent usual and popular among economists and looks back to a long tradition in economics (Stigler, 1954). This issue was also addressed by Houthakker (1957) as early as in the 1950s.The issues tie in to household expenditures and consumption have been disregarded in sociology and particularly empirical sociological research to a large degree, although family and household budget data frequ ently use for empirical study in the early days. Some commentrs and commentators of developments in sociological research thus conclude that consumption has been strongly miss in sociological research (Rosenkranz and Schneider, 2000). Thus it is an area which needs greater attention to be paid.Although there is a long history of research on patterns of household expenditures and their changes across time, which goes back to the 19th century and the famous prepare by Ernst Engel and others, these questions have attracted surprisingly little attention in recent courses.Blacklow and Ray, (2000) in their paper compare, using Australian unit record data, income and expenditure inequalities all over the period 1975-76 to 1993-94. The study finds inconsistencies mingled with the two variety movements over much of this period. They, also, observe differences in the nature of income and consumption disparities.Bgenhold and Fachinger, (2000) used repeated cross sectional data (RCS) in their empirical abridgment which is based on the westernmost German Income and Expenditure Survey (IES) in 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988 and 1993. The results foundered that the relationship between income and expenditure is stipulation only if it is weak. All in all, the social organisation of consumption is a research object in itself to obtain information about the living standard of individuals and households.Zaidi and Klass (2001) in their study on want and disagreement in in truth countries focus on income. This paper presents trends in consumption-based poverty and inequality in nine member countries of the European Union. During the 1980s, both poverty and inequality increase in Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium, while decreases in both poverty and inequality are observed for Spain and Portugal. In Greece only inequality change magnitude.Dhawan-Biswal, (2002) measure inequality in Canada with a comprehensive look at inequality trends in Atlantic Canad a during the period 1969 to 19966. They use consumption expenditure as a measure of family well being and compare it with the income based measure of well being. Overall consumption inequality has continuously been pass up in Atlantic Canada in comparison to the rest of Canada.Meyer and Sullivan, (2003) effect in their study that it is fairly compelling that most households can more easily report income. They suggested that use consumption to supplement income in analyses of poverty whenever possible.Kalwij and Salverda, (2004) come across in detail the changes in household expenditures patterns, and in particular services related expenditures, in the Netherlands over the years 1979, 1989 and 1998. utilise Engel curve estimations, these changes are related to changes in household demographics, employment, the budget and relative prices. They find that the dominating changes in demand are decreasing copes of expenditures on food and clothing and an increasing share of expenditur es on housing. Decrease in food expenditures is for a large part explained by changes in household characteristics and the budget and about a third is a price effect. The increase in housing expenditures share is predominantly a price effect.Blow, Leicester and Oldfield (2004) examined how and why has the way in which the average British family spends its money changed over the past 25 years by using data from the UK FES between 1975 and 1999. It looks not only at broad changes in total spending, but also at how the division of expenditure between basics and non-basics and between durable goods, non-durable goods and services has altered over time.Johnson, Smeeding and Torrey (2005) used the period 1981 and 2001, to measure economic inequality among groups in the general population in the United States. Two measures of income and consumption are used to gauge relative well-being. Households with children are at a disadvantage, relative to the general population through both prisms. And households with children are the only group whose distribution of consumption was relatively more unequal than their distribution of expendable income throughout the 1981-2001 period study. Comparison with the general population is a zero-sum game where households with children are relatively less well off, regardless of whether disposable income or consumption is used as the resource measure.Brewer, Goodman, and Leicester, (2006) in their study on Household spending in Britain by using 30 years of data from household surveys conclude that although there has been much recent emphasis on the advantages of measures of household expenditures in assessing household welfare in more academic circles, this has yet to work its way into the mainstream poverty measurement debate. This study shows the trends in poverty in Britain since the 1970s when household expenditure is used as a measure of monetary well-being, rather than household income and investigates how using spending, rathe r than income, as a measure of well-being alters our view of who is little. It examines the spending levels of the lowest-income households and analyses whether low-income pensioners spending on basic and non-basic items increased as a result of the large increases in entitlements to means-tested benefits since 1999.Zhang, Xie and Zhou, (2009) studied the disparity of consumption expenditure among rural areas in China by principle and method of wad analysis. Results showed that income and consumption expenditure of 31 districts, cities and provinces could be divided into 5 classes of income and consumption. Shanghai City was the only city rated as the first-class areas with highest income and consumption.Bhattacharya and Mahalanobis (1967) had decomposed the Gini-coefficient and the standard deviation of logarithms for the year 1957-58 based on the household consumer expenditure survey data of India and found that one-quarter of the total inequality was being explained by between- state inequality and the remaining three-quarters was explained by the within-state inequality.Paul, (1988) studied the importance of household composition in the analysis of inequality measurement based on the National Sample Survey data (25th round). The results for rural Punjab reveal that the ranking of households by per equivalent adult consumption expenditure (PEAE) differs significantly from the ranking by per capita consumption expenditure (PCE). Many households classified as suffering according to the criterion of PCE are not so classified by the criterion of PEAE. The exercise also reveals that the distribution of HCE, if not adjusted for household size and composition effects, gives biased measures of the extent of true inequality.Jain and Tendulkar (1989) in their paper deduces the analytical conditions for the movements in the same or in the opposite direction of the real and the nominal relative disparity in cereal consumption consequent upon the differential movement s in the prices of cereals faced by the bottom and the top fractile groups of the population. These conditions are used for interpreting the movements in the real and the nominal relative disparity with reference to the Indian rural population over the period from 1953 to 1978.Datt and Ravallion, (1990) argued that the costs and the benefits of regional policies depart tend to be borne astray within regions. Some benefits are likely to leak to the nonpoor in recipient regions, and some costs to the poor in presenter regions. The paper suggests that the quantitative potential for alleviating national poverty through purely regional redistributive policies is small. Even assuming no political problems, the maximum impact on poverty is nomore than could be achieved simply by giving everyone a uniform (untargeted) windfall gain equal to about 1.5 percent of Indias mean consumption. And other considerations including increased migration to areas of higher benefits make it unlikely t hat the maximum impact will be attained in practice. Greater alleviation of poverty requires supplementary interventions that reach the poor within regions, by reducing the costs borne by the poor in donor regions and enhancing benefits to the poor in recipient regions.Mishra and Parikh (1992) in their paper measured household consumer expenditure inequalities in India by regions (states) and sectors (urban-rural) for the years 1977-78 and 1983 based on the National Sample Survey data. The results consistently indicate that the inequality within states contributes much more towards national inequality and within-sector inequality explains a large part of state level inequality. The inequality at state levels has shown a decline from 1977-78 to 1983 imputable to a better monsoon season in 1983, and anti-poverty programmes.Dubey and Gangopadhyay (1998) in their analytical report mention intra-state disparities by using NSSO consumption income data set. There are several states in Ind ia where the incidence of poverty across regions within a state is very high. They reported for seven regions of Madhya Pradesh, poverty incidence varied from one of the lowest in the country in the western region to one of the highest in the eastern region.Deaton and Dreze (2002) in their paper presents a new set of integrated poverty and inequality estimates for India and Indian states for 1987-88, 1993-94 and 1999-2000. The poverty estimates are broadly consistent with independent evidence on per capita expenditure, state domestic product and real agricultural wages. They show that poverty decline in the 1990s proceeded more or less in line with earlier trends. Regional disparities increased in the 1990s, with the southern and western regions doing much better than the northern and eastern regions. Economic inequality also increased within states, especially within urban areas, and between urban and rural areas. They also examine other development indicators, relating for instanc e to health and breeding. Most indicators have continued to improve in the nineties, but social progress has followed very several(a) patterns, ranging from accelerated progress in some fields to slow down and even regression in others.Gaiha, Thapa, Imai and Kulkarni (2007) in their analysis of the 61st round of the NSS for 2004-05 confirms higher incidence and intensity of poverty among the STs and SCs, relative to non-ST/SC (Others). A decomposition of poverty gap suggests that a large part of the gap between the ST and Others is due to differences in returns or structural differences while among the SCs it is due largely to differences in characteristics or endowments. Whether these structural differences are a reflection of current discrimination is far from self-evident, attached the important role of personal identity in determining performance. The policy design therefore cannot be limited to enhancing the endowments of the STs, SCs and other disadvantaged groups.Dubey (20 09) examine the interstate highway disparity in five states in India i.e. Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Orissa and Punjab by using NSSO data of 50th round and 61st round. He used three indicators, consumption, inequality and incidence of poverty. Highest level of disparity emerged in Punjab followed by Gujarat and Kerala. Haryana has least disparities only marginally lower than that in Orissa.Singh (2010), in her study examined and analysed the disparities in level of living as measured by monthly per capita consumption expenditure across different income groups in various states in India based on 61st round survey of NSSO. Various measures like gini coefficient and rank for the states in rural and urban areas has been calculated. Disparities in MPCE across income groups are observed in Punjab.Sri coarseava and Mohanty (2010) in their study used data from the World health Survey, India, 2003, covering a nationally representative sample of 10,750 households and 9,994 adults, examines t he extent of agreement of monthly per capita consumption expenditure and economic proxies (combined with the wealth exponent) with the differentials in health estimates.Cain, Rana, Rhoda and Tandon, (2010) lend oneself household-level consumption expenditure data to examine the evolution of inequality during 1983-2004 in India. Various measures of inequality show that inequality levels were relatively stable during 1983-93, but increased during 1993-2004. The increases in inequality have not precluded reductions in poverty, however. They are also more of an urban phenomenon and can be accounted for by increases in returns to education in the urban sector to a considerable extent, especially among households that rely on income from education-intensive services and/or education-intensive occupations.Significance of the studyThe National Human information physical composition 2001 for India (2002) reveals vast differences in human development and poverty between the States of India in 1981. The report notes that At the state level, there are wide disparities in the level of human development. (NHDR 2002, page 4). The report also notes that disparities amongst the States with respect to human poverty are quite striking. Socio-economic disparities across the regions and intra-regional disparities among different segments of the society have been the major plummet for adopting planning process in India since independence.Even after its impressive performance in the field of science, technology and agriculture during the last three or quaternity decades, a vast majority of Indians are facing the problems of poverty. They are denied even the basic needs of human life like food, safe drinking water, shelter, health, education etc., and are forced to live in a degraded social and physical environment. According to the 61st NSS, the proportion of persons living below poverty line was estimated at 27.5%3 (i.e., more than 315 million people). But, about one third of t he population lives under the poverty line of $1 a day, and out of them three in four poor people live in rural areas. Thus, poverty in India is most widespread in the rural areas.Despite a vast range of poverty eradication programmes and several measures adopted in this regard, even after more than 60 years of Independence the situation is still very critical. In recent years, some significant changes have occurred in the poverty alleviation strategy. The Government of India has launched various programmes, such as NAREGA, MNAREGA, Integrated Rural Development Programme (IRDP), Training of Rural Youth for Self usance (TRYSEM), Development of Women and Children in Rural Area (DWCRA), Wage Employment Programme, National Rural Employment Programme, Jawahar Rozgar Yojana, etc., for the alleviation of poverty. Further, these programmes are now the responsibility of the local bodies (Panchayati Raj institutions) that are expected to improve their performance. But despite all the rigorou s efforts, the desired results could not be achieved and considerable level of regional disparities remained in the society. The Structure Adjustment Programme of economic reforms since 1991 with stabilisation and deregulation policies as their central pieces seems to have further widened the regional disparities. Sen 2002 rightly observed that, the real concern of the so called anti-globalization protesters is surely not globalization per se, for these protests are amongst the most seem to stem in large part from the continuing deprivations and rising disparities in level of livings that they see in current period of globalization. Liberalisation had resulted in the rich becoming richer and the poor, poorer. No State actually got poorer in terms of falling per capita income but the interstate inequality certainly increased1. The seriousness of the emerging acute regional imbalances has not yet accredited the public attention it deserves. On the basis of above it can be understood t hat no significant study has been found in the area of disparity in household consumption expenditure for the period 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 by using NSSO unit level data in India. The NSSO has been collecting data on consumption expenditure on a incessant basis for over four decades. Along with other information, it collects detailed information on food and non-food items in a reference period. While majority of the studies happen to be at macro level, this study is a more specific analysis in micro redact by using unit level data household survey conducted by NSSO in India. It is able to lay stress on certain critical issues that needed a more serious discussion. To large extent, the study can be regarded as pioneering one. Objective of the studyThe major objectives of the study are as followsTo bash the expenditure structures and consumption patternsTo know the level of disparity in household consumer expenditure in Indian society. To know the level of disparity in househo ld consumer expenditure in various regions (states) and sectors (urban-rural) in the society. To know the difference in levels and patterns of household consumer expenditure and across socio-economic groups i.e. caste, religion and family structure in the society. To know the difference in levels and patterns of food and non-food expenditure of across socio-economic groups i.e. caste, religion and family structure in the society.MethodologyDataCollecting consumption expenditure data is not new in India. The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) conducted an all-India survey of households on participation and expenditure in education, employment, unemployment, migration and consumer expenditure on a regular basis for over four decades. Surveys on consumer expenditure are being conducted quinquennially on a large sample of households from the 27th round (October 1972 September 1973) of NSS onwards. Additionally, the NSSO has conducted yearbook consumer expenditure surveys using a smaller sample of households from 1986-87 to 2007-08. In the present study data will be utilised from the three rounds of NSSO consumer expenditure survey i.e. 62, 63 and 64 round collected in the year 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 respectively .These three consumer expenditure surveys belongs to annual series.Data AnalysisIn the present study the disparity in terms of consumer expenditure will be measured in the above mentioned three rounds of survey. Data provided by NSSO is in text document. For the analysis of these unit level data we will use statistical software (STATA). Disparity in terms of MPCE will be calculated for the state wise, region wise, caste, religion and family structure. Different statistical methods (like descriptive statistics, range, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, Gini coefficient Lorenz curve, Theils superpower, etc.) will be utilised for measuring inequality and disparity. Graphical presentation of the results will be used for the easy under standing of the data. There are the criteria (Mean Independence, Population size independence, Symmetry, Pigou Dalton Transfer sensitivity2, Decomposability, Statistical Testability) that make a good measure of income inequality. Among the most widely used are the Theil indexes and the mean log deviation measure. Both belong to the family of generalized entropy. The formula is given byWhere is the mean income per person (or expenditure per capita). The entertain of the measures vary between zero and infinity, with zero representing an equal distribution and higher values representing higher levels of inequality. The parameter in the GE class represents the weight given to distances between incomes at different parts of the income distribution, and can take any real value. For lower value of GE is more sensitive to changes in the lower tail of the distribution and for higher values GE is more sensitive to changes the affect the upper tail. The most common values of used are 0, 1, and 2. GE(1) is Theils T index and GE(0) is Theils L (sometimes refered to as the mean log deviation measures) are given byAtkinson has proposed another class of inequality measures that are used from time to time. This class also has a weighting parameter (which measures aversion to inequality). The Atkinson inequality measures defined asDecomposition of Income InequalityThe issue of relating subgroup inequality levels to overall inequality has been discussed in the number of recent studies (Cowell 1980, Cowell and Kuga 1981, Bourguignon, 1979, Shorrocks 1980 and 1984, Shorrocks and Mukherjee, 1982, Das and Parikh 1982, Mishra and Parikh 1992).If the total inequality can be expressed as a function of sub-group inequality values, when the sub-groups are mutually exclusive and exhaustive, then a variety of ways is found to decompose the total inequality. The particular method of decomposition depends on the nature of the inequality index and the way in which it is decomposed since the decomposability of the indices differ from measure to measure. The most attractive type of decomposability has been additive decomposability. An index is additively decomposable if it can be neatly expressed as the sum of a between-group term and a within-group term. Conceptually, the between-group component can be defined as the value of the inequality index when all the within-group inequalities are presume to be non-existent by a hypothetical assignment of the group average income to each member of the same group. The common inequality indicators mentioned above can be used to assess the major contributors to inequality, by different subgroups of the population and by region. For example, average income may vary from region to region, and this alone implies some inequality between groups. Moreover, incomes vary inside each region, adding a within-group component to total inequality. For policy purposes, it is useful to be able to decompose these sources of inequality if most inequ ality is due to disparities across regions, for instance, then the focus of policy may need to be on regional economic development, with special attention to helping the poorer regions.More generally, household income is determined by household and personal characteristics, such as education, gender, and occupation, as well as geographic factors including urban and regional location. Some overall inequality is due to differences in such characteristics-this is the between-group component-and some occurs because there is inequality within each group, for instance, among people with a given level of education or in a given occupation. The generalized entropy (GE) class of indicators, including the Theil indexes, can be decomposed across these partitions in an additive way, but the Gini index cannot. To decompose Theils T index (that is, GE(1)), let Y be the total income of all N individuals in the sample, and be mean income. Likewise, Yj is the total income of a subgroup (for example, the urban population) with Nj members, and is the mean income of this subgroup. Using T to represent GE(1),Where is the value of GE(1) for subgroup j. Equation separate the inequality measure in to two components the first of which represents within group inequality while the plump for term measures the between-group inequality.

Free College Admissions Essays: Geography :: College Admissions Essays
Geography   The diverse nature of Geography has always attracted me to the matter, and the bridge it forms between the Arts and the Sciences reflects galore(postnominal) of my interests. I am greatly enjoying the work which I am doing for the A level syllabus, on both the human and physical sides of the course, and would like to continue to psychoanalyse in both these fields. Geography gives the opportunity to accumulate a valuable range of skills, and I naval divisionicularly enjoy the variety of analytical, numerical, bibliographical and research skills which I am called upon to use. The study of Geography will enable me to consider complex interactions between the human and physical environments, and the scope for useful research within the subject is very appealing. I grow attended a number of Geographical Association lectures organised by my local branch, and look forward to taking office for my own work in response to such stimulus.   My interest in Geography is reflected in my choice of supporting A level subjects. I have found them very helpful in furthering my understanding of issues such as ecology and the processing of raw data, where subjects overlap. The study of French has also helped me to appreciate European issues whilst maintaining a language which I enjoy. I plan to take a Gap Year with the G.A.P. Organisation, to work as a support teacher in a developing nation. This, I believe, will be a valuable experience, and allow me to gain some first hand case studies in social, spacial and physical geography, which may provide a foundation for further study. I am very interested in the developing world, and have actively back up Christian Aid campaigns, as well as speaking on the Economic and Environment Committee at a Model United Nations Conference. Whilst complemental the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards, I have been able to improve my cartographic skills, and observe a variety of landscapes, which has added to my inter est in physical geography. Taking part in the Tall Ships race on an S.T.A schooner for my Gold Residential Award has also helped me to appreciate the value of team work and perseverance.

Common Themes In Short Stories :: essays research papers
James Joyce, a most prestigious author of many titles, has incorporated into his plant life many different thoughts, life experiences, as well as themes. Those three things that he used in his works I believe are what make him the awesome author he is today. The main focus of this paper is to inform you of the themes that reoccur in many of his short stories. Some themes that I noticed were family, defeat, dreams of escape, love infatuations, and finally, sin.Family is a strong theme in Joyce&8217s writings for in Araby, the young teen finds himself obeying his uncle and asking his permission to go to the festival showing his sense of watch and need for family. In Eveline the family theme can be seen when Eveline stays and takes over the role of head of the household as a teen when her mother dies, because she feels it is her calling and she owed it to her mother. The family theme that I identified can be interpreted many different ways from the context that it was written, but these two short stories were appropriate for this theme. licking another prevailing theme in some of Joyce&8217s work has also been outlined in Araby. Everyday the boy would suffer with an infatuation with a girl he could never have. He even had to deal with his frustration of his self-serving uncle, which he and his aunt were afraid of. The absolute epitome of frustration comes from his uncle when he arrived late at home delaying the one chance of going to Araby. When the boy arrives at Araby to find out that all of the shops are closed his true frustration was reveled on the inside. James Joyce, the man who implied all of his themes was a master of disguise because this theme was an extreme accomplishment to find. The dream of escape comes into play in his stories also. In Araby the boy after arriving at Araby he discovered that everything had already closed. That was his one and only implied chance of escape from his Uncle that was so cruel and uncaring, even unflinching towards what he wanted to do with his life. Joyce uses all of the previous frustration endured by the boy as a springboard for the epiphany he realized in the end. Before the boy had accepted all of the frustration that had come with his life and after the destruction of what was supposed to be his magical escape at the Araby all of the frustration turns into fussiness and darkness.
